Driving Web Traffic With Search Trends
by Lee Asher on Aug.04, 2010, under Traffic Generation
Search trends refer to popular patterns of search in a search engine at any given time. They reveal the taste of search engine users and can help predict their future behaviour over time. For example, during the South Africa FIFA world cup, there was a lot of searches for football related terms. Other times when search trends can be clearly observed include immediately after a breaking news or popular events such as musical concerts and so on.
Overall, by observing and monitoring search trends in any given search engine, you can notice patterns and specific issues, news, events, items that the wider public are interested in. It is however, not enough to notice these trends. In actual fact, search trending is an important way of driving occasional surge in Web traffic to your Web site or blog. You must be quick once you observe a search trend of interest and use it to your advantage. Mark the keywords and write an article that is related to the trending topic. Doing so automatically puts your blog or Web site in the pool of Web sites that will compete in search engine results.
Just in case you are wondering, there are many tools available on the Internet for monitoring search trends and the good news is that some of these tools are actually free. For example, Google Insights for Search and Google Trends. Take note of the words ‘occasional surge’ used above. You still have to make use of other means to keep your visitors once you have succeeded in attracting them to your Web site.
