Convincing Your Readers to Link to You

by on Jul.02, 2011, under Traffic Generation

The main reason readers of blogs do not leave comments or click on links before they leave your blog is due to you not having given them enough information to chew on, think on, or any other reason.

Remember, your readers are also investors, and they need to be convinced that the venture they are going to spend their time on is worth it.

If you are anything like me, you know that there are times when you just feel as though you have said the same thing a million times. There is simply nothing left to blog about or nothing that seems to excite you. It has become a chore to you that you feel must be performed.

Below is a list of seven ways I use to get myself out of the writer’s blah, or when I am feeling too tired to blog. I have found out by accident that it is also a great way to give your reader’s some really unique reasons to leave their linkbacks!

1. Switch sides of the fence. For instance, if you normally blog about the necessary keyword research, find all the reasons why this does not always do the trick and then blog about it!

2. Take the shortcut. One of the best places I like to find shortcuts is on Scribd.com, and then find something interesting to read, and of course timely, from the “trending” section. Here’s the beauty of this, what is being trended and popular is user-driven, and that means it is currently on everyone’s mind. If you read what is interesting and it does not relate to your niche, I promise that if you write you posts that this will generate some kind of ideas – maybe a tangent, but something that is relevant to your readers, that offers fresh thoughts for you.

3. A family story or reverse-engineer. Of course, first, think about your family favorites. Which one is your favorite? What does it deal with, and why would you care to write about it? You need to answer this question, than you can illustrate it with the anecdote. People will identify more with a story than a lecture, and you do too!

4. Chill out. Keep in mind that not every post will generate thousands of links. However, all are building foundations, you are laying the groundwork for your second post…..or maybe the third….It is vital to be real, and keep a clear focus on the reader. Ask yourself this: “Why would this relate to him or her? – Then, make it a habit to write in a relaxed way.

5. Piggy-back posting. The best way to do this is take a very hot topic that is under the blog discussion and then summarize 4 or 5 of the top points or arguments on other blog sites, and make sure to credit the authors. This will not only produce an immediate linkback from the top-level, (the author in question), but people will think it is more authoritative, (this is helpful if you are new to the game), rather than giving your own opinion. Moreover, this hot topic will have been identified by you.

6. Look for any gaps. Just like you would if you were assessing competitors’ products before making your own, you need to look for ways to fill the “gaps” your competition is leaving out of their posts.

7. Make it a habit to read through authoritative comments. Often you will get great ideas for new subjects on your blog from reading your reader’s comments – this is especially true when it is a very hot topic. Moreover, use the “keywords” that their comments generate to drive traffic to your “house.”

So, there it is, seven ways to engage your next visitor to your blog. Try it out for yourself – then you can see if these tactics work for you and generate some links!
